Chapter 17: Zane

“Man, what the hell was that?” I asked as soon he closed the passenger door on my Dodge Charger.

“What you mean?” he feigned ignorance.

“You too close to this. I think this has a lot more to do with just a job. You feeling that girl a little too much.”

“Who, La? Man, it ain’t even that deep. Baby girl is a job. No more, no less.” He waved me off before checking his phone. I wasn’t sure if he was trying to convince me or himself, but I wasn’t buying it.

Blue had never been the type to let a girl cloud his judgment and make him lose sight of what he supposed to be doing, but I could see it in his eyes when he looked at ol’ girl that she had his mind gone.

Damn, I’m rude as hell. Let me introduce myself. My name is Zane and I’m twenty-one years old. I met Blue after he moved into my neighborhood with his aunt. Some kids from around the way were talking about his mom being a crack whore and I swear all hell broke loose.

“I’m telling y’all, his mom was behind my apartment building giving my uncle head for a twenty rock. That shit was looking so good that I almost asked if I can join!” this boy Jordan laughed, dapping up his little minions that flocked around him like he was the best thing since all-white K-Swiss.

“My mama ain’t no crack whore. Take it back!”

That was the first time I had heard him say more than two words unless a teacher was asking him a question in class.

“Or you’ll what?” he challenged, getting up in Blue’s face.

Before the words could leave his mouth good, Blue pounced on him and gave him the business. When I saw one of Jordan’s home boys jump into the mix, I started swinging too. Wasn’t no jumping around my way. If he could talk shit, then he should have been able to back that shit up. From that day on, we were joined at the hip. If you saw me then he wasn’t too hard to find and vice versa.

“Aye, nigga! You don’t hear me talking to you?” Blue yelled, snapping his fingers in my face.

“Man, what?”

“I was asking what Tech say about that shipment that was supposed to come in later on today?”

“He said that everything should be ready by eight. Are you riding out with me or are we driving your car?” I asked, glancing over in his direction. The smile this nigga had on his face could light an abyss. I swear he was showing all thirty-two, but instead of calling him out on it, I let it go. Whatever baby girl was saying in them text messages had that nigga happy as hell.

“Uh… we can drive your car,” he replied after he put his phone back in his pocket.

“Alright. Well, we can ride over there now. We already dressed for the occasion anyway.”
